Justice Markandeya Katju has been judges of the Supreme Court from 20 April 2006 to 19 September 2011.
The Supreme Court Women’s Advocate Association (SCWLA) has described the remarks of former Supreme Court judge Markandeya Katju as shocking and derogatory. Katju wrote on social media on August 20 that the women lawyers who turned to me, I gave a verdict in their favor.
SCWLA said on Saturday that this statement is a direct attack on every female lawyer’s dignity, honesty and professional identity. Such words show the hard work and ability of women inferior. SCWLA said,
A former judge, who was once entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the Constitution and maintaining judicial values, did not expect such thinking. Such statements question the fairness of the judiciary and promote misconceptions in the society.
SCWLA demanded Katju for an unconditional public apology and appealed to all the lawyers to strongly oppose such a mentality. At the same time, seeing the controversy growing, Katju on Thursday described it as a joke, apologizing on the social media platform X.
Former judge’s statement is being criticized on social media
Katju’s statement is also responding to social media. People said that this comment is not compatible with the level of a former judge. Critics say that even after retiring, the judge should maintain the dignity of the post on which he has been.
Some lawyers wrote that such a statement stains judicial honesty and gives a wrong message that instead of hard work, one can get progress by blinking an eye. Many users and lawyers called this statement derogatory for the judiciary. A lawyer wrote on social media that the orders given by him should be reviewed.
Katju and old relationship between controversies
Katju, who retired from the Supreme Court in 2011, has been in the news due to his sharp comments earlier. His statements on politics, poetry and philosophy created controversy many times. He often writes on social media with Urdu lions and personal stories, but his comments have faced criticism by calling him inflammatory many times.
Katju’s disputed statement
- 2012: Writing articles on the Indian Express, Katju said that 90% of Indians are fools.
- January 2013: He called Pakistan a fake country and claimed that the Kashmir problem would be solved only by combining Indo-Pak.
- 30 January 2015: On Twitter, he wrote that Shazia Ilmi is more beautiful than Kiran Bedi and would have won the party if he was made the CM candidate of BJP.
- September 2016: In a post, Katju described several religious leaders including Mother Teresa as unscientific, radical and foolish.
- 5 July 2025: On social media, he wrote that Indian and Pakistani Muslims are fake Muslims due to caste discrimination.
