The Sabarimala Temple is in Periyar Tiger Reserve Kshetra of Pattamatta district in Kerala. Lord Ayyapa is worshiped in this 12th century temple.
Assembly elections are due in Kerala next year. The time is short, so political parties have started preparing their ‘political grounds and electoral weapons’. The big thing is that for the first time in the center of these grounds, ‘Hindus’ are seen more.
The Left in Kerala is the CPI (M) government, which is also considered an atheist. But, this party is going to ‘call’ Lord Ayyapa this time. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has organized a three -day Global Ayyappa Sangamam in Pampa, situated in the foothills of Sabarimala since 20 September. In this, all caste classes including Hindu saints, high Brahmins of all the sects of Kerala are being invited.
Such a big event in the name of Lord Ayyappa is also shocked because the lower caste Hindus and OBC votes always support CPIM, but this time the Left’s attempt is to bring the upper caste Hindus together. Political analysts consider it an attempt to get back the Hindu votes lost by the Left party after the 2018 Sabarimala crisis.
Leader of the Opposition VD Satisan has taunted CM Vijayan that when the communists woke up for Lord Ayyappa. Hindu organizations of the state have also come out against the event. VHP state president Viji Thampi described the event as unconstitutional.

Lord Ayyappa is very important in elections
Lord Ayyappa has a lot of influence not only on the voters of Kerala, but also in other South Indian states and Sabarimala is the solitude of these deities. Every year millions of Hindus across the country reach here to visit. Therefore, Lord Ayyappa has become very important in the election. However, this CPIM’s effort has angered the main opposition Congress in Kerala.
CPIM may prove to be a risky step
Temple affairs specialist TS Shyamkumar in Kerala says that for the first time the CPIM wants to win the faith of devotees of Ayyappa again without provoking ‘reformists’. She is trying to join Ayyappa Puja without losing the support of her minority followers.
That is, the intention behind this event is public. In such a situation, this can also be a risky political step for the state’s LDF government.

Everything that is important for you to know
- Was CPIM’s image deteriorated by the Supreme Court’s decision on Sabarimala?
In 2018, when the Supreme Court lifted the age ban for the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple, the LDF government of the state implemented it. This was widely opposed. There were violent movements. It had a political impact. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, LDF could win one of the 20 seats. In 2024, he won only one seat. While the Congress -led UDF won 18 seats. One BJP got it.
- Why and on the side of the upper caste Hindus of the Left?
The population of Kerala is 55% Hindus, 27% Muslim and 18% are Christians. Hindus are majority, but they are divided. The lower caste Hindus and OBCs traditionally support the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by CPI (M), while upper caste Nair and some Ezhawa have been rapidly supported by BJP. Muslims and Christians, who have historically supported the Congress -led UDF, remain important swing blocks with LDF dent in recent years.
- What is the fear of CPIM?
The number of Ejhawa and Nair Hindus in Kerala is up to 41% of the total population. Most of these people are employed or government employees. In the 2021 assembly elections, LDF got 47% Ezhawa and 24% Nair votes. However, the situation changed completely in the Lok Sabha elections. The party got their votes around 22% and 7% respectively. Votes were divided into BJP and Congress.
- Is Vijayan on Stalin’s footsteps?
Last year, the DMK held the International Murugan Bhakta Sammelan in Tamil Nadu. The purpose of this conference was to tarnish the anti -Hindu allegations of BJP and it was also a large extent successful. CPIM is also taking the same step. That is why it has invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for the inauguration of the conference. However, Stalin has refused to come. He is sending two of his cabinet ministers in the program. Both are associated with Sabarimala.
Son of Lord Ayyapa ‘Mohini’

The Sabarimala temple consists of 4.5 to 5 crore people every year.
The Sabarimala Temple is in Periyar Tiger Reserve Kshetra of Pattamatta district in Kerala. Lord Ayyapa is worshiped in this 12th century temple. It is believed that Ayyapa is the son of ‘Mohini’, the female form of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. Every year 4.5 to 5 crore people come here to see them. The responsibility of the arrangement of this temple is in the hands of the Travancore Devaswam Board, which is watching the management of temples in the state.
