Former Chief Election Commissioner SY Qureshi, while criticizing the Election Commission on Sunday, said that the Commission should have investigated the allegations of ‘vote theft’ of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and not to use ‘objectionable and derogatory’ language against him.
Qureshi said in an interview to PTI that Rahul used many political words while making allegations such as ‘hydrogen bomb’ but it is just ‘political rhetoric’. Despite this, the serious complaints he has raised should have been investigated in detail.
Qureshi criticized the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, saying that the Commission has opened the ‘Bhanumati’s box’ and put a hand in the ‘bee’s hive’, which will harm the credibility of the institution itself. It is necessary for the Election Commission to be fair as well as to look fair.

What did you say on which issue…
Action on Rahul: Qureshi said that Rahul is the leader of the opposition and raises the voice of crores of people. In such a situation, the commission should not have used the language like ‘give affidavits, or else action’. Describing it against the dignity of the Election Commission, he said that the general process is to conduct an inquiry on the complaint, not to scare.
Question on sir: He described SIR as a dangerous step. According to him, the work that was done gradually in the 3 decades is wrong to change it in a few months and this will increase controversy and errors. He also described the voter ID card (Epic) out of the list of documents and said that it is the commission’s own identity which will affect democracy by denying.
Behavior with opposition: He expressed concern over the behavior of the Commission with Qureshi opposition. He said that listening to the opposition is necessary for the strength of democracy, but today the situation is that 23 parties had to say that they are not getting time to meet the Commission. This is a dangerous sign for democracy.
