- Supreme Court Said Not Working CCTV Cameras in Police Stations is a lapse in surveillance

The Supreme Court has expressed concern about not working of CCTV cameras in police stations across the country. The court called it a lack of surveillance and said that to see the feed of cameras, there should be a control room where human interference. If a camera is closed then immediately alert is received. The court has said to order the case on 26 September.
A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta said that every police station should be inspected by an independent agency. The court suggested that an IIT can be included for this work, which creates software so that all CCTV feeds are monitored by AI (AI) at one place.
The court said that if a camera is closed, then the information should be immediately received by the concerned legal service authority or monitoring agency.
Important orders were given in 2018 and 2020 In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered CCTV to be installed to stop human rights violations in police stations. In December 2020, the court said that cameras should be installed in every police station’s entry-exit points, lockups, corridors, receptions and outside parts of the lockup.
These cameras should be night vision and can record audio-video. Also, their data can be protected for at least one year.
Death in 11 police custody in 8 months in Rajasthan The Supreme Court took self -cognizance of a media report on 4 September, stating that there have been 11 deaths in police custody in Rajasthan in the last eight months. 7 of these cases are from Udaipur.
