The new rules for general reservation will be applicable from October 1.
Indian Railways is going to make a big change in online ticket booking system from 1 October. The Railway Ministry has announced that e-Aadhaar verification will be necessary while booking General Reservation (General Reservation) tickets like Tatkal tickets.
The Ministry of Railways has issued a notification and informed about this. According to the ministry, Aadhaar verification will be necessary to book tickets in the first 15 minutes of opening a general reservation on IRCTC website or app. This will curb fake IDs, blackback of tickets of agents and booking of bots.
If your IRCTC account is already linked to Aadhaar, then booking will be easy. Waiting will be low, and tickets will be confirmed quickly. The old schedule to book general reservation tickets at the computerized PRS counters of the railway will remain the same. Also, 10 minutes of ban on ticket booking for authorized ticketing agents of Railways will continue without any change.

The Ministry of Railways issued a notification regarding the rules of General Reservation Ticket Booking.
Understand the new Rules of General Reservation Ticket Booking 9 in question and answer …
Question 1. General reservation Why were Aadhaar Verification Rules brought for?
answer: Many times it was seen that ticket booking was sold in a few minutes as soon as the booking started, as brokers and fake agents used to book tickets in software or wrong ways. This made it difficult for common passengers to get tickets.
The purpose of the new rules is that only real passengers get the opportunity to book tickets and stop forgery. Aadhaar verification will ensure that the ticket is booking the same, whose Aadhaar number is registered. For the first 15 minutes, agents will not be allowed to book tickets for both AC and non-AC classes.
Question 2. How will Aadhaar Authentication work?
answer: This is similar to the new rules brought for Tatkal ticket booking recently. In this, if you are booking tickets from IRCTC website or app, then you have to link your Aadhaar number to your IRCTC account first. When you go to book tickets, an OTP will come on your registered mobile number. Your booking will be confirmed only after adding this OTP.
Question 3. If I do not have an Aadhaar card, will I not be able to book tickets?
answer: According to the new rules, Aadhaar authentication is necessary. If your account is not linked to Aadhaar, you will not be able to book confirmed tickets in the first 15 minutes. No other way of booking tickets without Aadhaar has been explained in the information given by the Railways.
Question 4. What is the change for those who book tickets from the counter?
answer: If you book tickets from the railway station counter, then from 1 October 2025 you will have to give Aadhaar number. Your Aadhaar verification at the counter will be through OTP. That is, your mobile number should be linked to Aadhaar, so that OTP can come. Even if you are booking tickets for someone else, that passenger’s Aadhaar number and OTP will still be needed.
Question 5. What will happen if I book a ticket from an agent?
answer: For the first 10 minutes, agents will not be able to book tickets. Even after that, if an agent books tickets, he will also have to do Aadhaar and OTP verification.
Question 6. Do I need to link Aadhaar in my IRCTC account?
answer: Yes, if you want to book tickets online, it is necessary to link the Aadhaar number in your IRCTC account. You can add Aadhaar details to the “My Profile” section by logging on the IRCTC website or app. Make sure that your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, otherwise OTP will not come.

Question 7. What should I do if I face any problem?
answer: If you have any problem in booking tickets, such as OTP do not come or there is no Aadhaar link, then you can call the IRCTC helpline (139). If you want, you can also ask for help at the ticket counter of the nearest railway station. If there is a problem related to Aadhaar, contact UIDAI’s helpline (1947).
Question 8. Will these rules apply throughout India?
answer: Yes, these rules will be applicable in all railway zones across India, where there is ticket facility. Whether you book a ticket from Delhi to Mumbai or Chennai from Kolkata, Aadhaar Authentication will be necessary everywhere. Railways have instructed the Center for Railway Information System (CRIS) and IRCTC to make necessary technical changes to implement this change.
Question 9: Five people are booking ticks, everyone’s base verification is necessary?
answer: No, the Aadhaar verification of all passengers is not necessary for 5 people at the time of booking tickets.
General Rules for Group Booking:
- Tickets can be booked simultaneously up to a maximum of 12 passengers on IRCTC. That is, 12 people can come in a PNR.
- The base is optional to add passengers to the master list, but the base of at least one passenger (usually booked) should be verified for immediate or first 15 -minute general reservation.
- If a passenger is unable to provide base, then other ID proof (eg voter ID, passport) can be used, but prioritizes the railway base for verification.
- Aadhaar is OTP optional for counter booking (PRS), but it is mandatory for online.
