The year 1986… Raipur.

The year was 1986. Jageshwar Prasad was at that time as Bill Assistant in Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) Raipur. Then one day an employee Ashok Kumar Verma came and pressured to pass the outstanding bill. Jageshwar said clearly, I cannot pass the bill until the order comes from above.

The next day the same employee arrived with 20 rupees as a bribe. Jageshwar raised the notes in anger and drove him away. But Jageshwar did not know that his whole world would change from here.

24 October 1986

It was morning. Jageshwar was getting ready from the house and was leaving the office that the same employee came again at the nearby grocery store. While talking, he forcefully put 2 notes of 50-50 in his pocket. Jageshwar had tried to remove the note from the pocket when the Vigilance team of the Lokayukta came out.

As soon as the Vigilance team caught Jageshwar Prasad, the crowd gathered all around. People started whispering that they were caught doing bribery. These are the government employees. If someone taunted, someone raised his finger. In front of everyone, their hands were washed away, the chemical notes were shown by waving.

At that time Jageshwar was repeatedly saying that he is innocent, he did not take bribe, but no one listened to him. His identity changed from that day in the eyes of the crowd. An honest employee was made directly ‘bribery’.

And then the bribery case of bribery was registered for bribery case of 100 rupees. Jageshwar says that I did not even know the man. But from the same day, the whole world of me and my family changed.

Respect, job and family… all ruined

He was suspended from 1988 to 1994. Then Rewa was transferred. Had to work in half a salary. Promotion, increment all stopped.

“How would the house run in a salary of two and a half thousand rupees? There were four children, they missed their studies. The fees could not fill. The wife was constantly under stress and finally passed away. I was known for honesty in the whole society and office… but everything is over.”

Pension was also not received after retirement. Hades in school to raise stomach, sometimes did small things. Old age came from youth while applying muscles in the courts.

What is a bribe, it is understood from the taunts of society

For four decades, not only his body, but the whole family got old while circling the court-court. His younger son Neeraj Awadhiya says that when this incident happened, I was only 12 years old and today I have become 50.

Even today, that childhood injury is clearly visible in Neeraj’s eyes. Neeraj says that at the age of 12, I did not even know what the bribe is, but the society explained to me with taunts. People used to call me the son of a bribery. Neighbors stopped coming home, making distance from the relatives. Children in school did not talk to me.

Exhaled from school, now running through government ration

The crisis of money worsened the situation. Many times, due to lack of fees, he would be banished from school. There were no money to buy pen, copy, book. As a result, Neeraj and his siblings lost their studies. Everyone somehow completed his studies from private.

Neeraj also did a private MA with great difficulty and then got involved in small tasks. The brothers and sisters got married in some way, but Neeraj did not marry due to the crisis of money.

Neeraj told that even today the house runs with the help of rice from the government ration shop.

Trial court to High Court, 39 -year battle

In 2004, the trial court convicted him and sentenced him to one year in jail and a fine of Rs 1000 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. But Jageshwar did not lose. He appealed to the High Court.

Finally… the High Court canceled the trial court verdict and acquitted Jageshwar Prasad after 39 years.

39 -year battle imprisoned in 90 year old house cupboard

The 90 -year -old ancestral house standing in the narrow streets of Awadhiya Para of Raipur is now a witness of the pain that dominated the life of Jageshwar Prasad. Their steps in getting down from the shabby stairs now tremble, the breath swells.

Sometimes those who used to travel to the office and court quickly, today barely two-three stairs are not able to descend without support. If you open the old cupboard of the house, then more court-court documents are found in it.

Yellow files, dust notices and copies of cases are all standing as evidence of the longest battle of their lives. The same paper was expected to restore respect for him and life -long burden.

Got justice, but at what cost?

Jageshwar says at the age of 83. The delay in justice is equivalent to not getting justice. They say yes, I was acquitted, but my life has been destroyed. My whole life, my family, my wife, the future of my children. Everyone got up with this case.

Tears come out of his son Neeraj’s eyes. Our childhood was spent in courts and taunts. Papa’s name became clear, but our life could never be cleared.

Now just get pension and arrears, I want to relax in the last days

Jageshwar said that now he has neither courage nor strength to visit the court-court. Four decades of fatigue have bowed their steps, they say that at least the same financial relief should be given from the government which is necessary at this stage of their age.

Jageshwar is only seeking repairing the remaining time with these money, so that on the last day, do not pass between the tightness and do not have to spread their hands in front of anyone.
