Buta Singh told on video call that I reached the city with great difficulty in three days in an injured condition. At present he is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Moscow. His jaw has now healed to some extent. Right now the doctors are saying that an operation has to be done. Now I don’t have money. Somehow I should be called back. He also appealed to other Indian youth not to come to Russia. There is not much earning here. Come only if you can afford. Even after coming here, don’t fall into the trap of joining the army.
Buta Singh said-
I was sent to the army camp and here my passport was confiscated. I was given a uniform and forced to fight in the war under threat of death. I got injured in the drone attack. Treatment is going on for a month.

- Found agent from YouTube, he sent me for studies: Buta Singh’s sister Karamjeet told that her brother wanted to go abroad. For this he watched a travel agent’s video on YouTube in October. He called her on the number given to her and expressed his desire to go to Russia for studies. After this the agent told him that he would send it. Studying in Russia is cheaper than studying in Canada. He asked for three and a half lakh rupees to send him to Russia.
- Didn’t have money so sold land, took some loan: Karamjeet told that the brother talked to the family about going to Russia. He told that going to Russia would cost around Rs 4 lakh. The family thought that the son would go abroad and earn money. Poverty at home will also go away. For this the mother mortgaged her jewelery and borrowed money on interest. Also sold some land and took a loan. After this he reached Russia in October 2024.

- Started working to meet the expenses of studies: Buta Singh told that to meet the expenses of his studies, he started working as a daily wage laborer in Moscow from Russia. Sometimes he would get work at a shop and sometimes at a construction site. According to Buta Singh, even this was not enough to cover his expenses and he started looking for a permanent job. During this time he met a woman from Russia. The woman took him with her on the pretext of getting him a job. He got a deal signed on paper with him.
- Army told to do construction work, taught to use weapons: The woman told him that there was construction work in the Russian Army. To work in the army, basic training in using weapons is necessary. In this way the woman deceived him and sent him to a military camp in Russia. He was kept here for 10 days and the soldiers taught him how to use guns and other weapons. After this he was sent to the border from Moscow. He was told that there was work at the border. Two soldiers will also go with you. After coming to the border here, he was told that he had to fight in the war against Ukraine.
- Sprinkled in the jaw in a drone blast a month and a half ago: One and a half month ago there was a drone attack like in Ukraine. Some sprinkles from the drone hit his jaw and he fell there. Both the soldiers accompanying him died in the bombing. When he regained consciousness, he somehow walked for three days and reached Moscow city. After coming here to the camp, he explained his condition, after which the soldiers got him admitted to the government hospital here. Now his jaw is somewhat fine. But he neither has money nor any employment to return to India.
Buta Singh’s last house on the street in the village Chak is in one of the last lanes of Buta Singh village inside Kaniya Kalan village. His mother Paramjeet Kaur, younger sister Karamjeet Kaur and father Ram Singh live here. Buta Singh’s mother Paramjeet Kaur says emotionally that we demand the government to bring back our son. Buta Singh’s family says that their son has been framed. He had studied till 12th and had gone to Russia due to financial constraints of the family.

In response, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan said that the Russian authorities concerned have been requested to ensure the safety, welfare and early return of Indian citizens. The Ministry of External Affairs said Indian centers in Russia have provided assistance to Indian nationals who have served in the Russian Armed Forces to return to India, including assistance with travel documents and providing air tickets as required.
