According to the India Tourism Data Compendium report of the Union Tourism Ministry, a new trend of slow-travel is emerging among Indian tourists.

In this, instead of visiting many places in a short time (flash trips), tourists are now spending a long time at a particular place, so that they can deeply experience the local life, culture and experience.

The report shows that the share of Indians visiting the Middle East has increased from 33% to 36% in a year. There has been about 25% increase in Indian tourists to South East Asia.

In the year 2024, 3.09 crore Indians went abroad and the average period of stay abroad has also increased to more than 50 days.

Compared to the year 2023, 30 lakh more travelers got their Indian passports stamped. The average stay period of Indians abroad in the year 2023 will be 47 days, whereas it was 41 days a decade ago i.e. in 2015.

Visitors to Vietnam increased by 67%

  • According to the report, the total number of foreign trips by Indians to the top-10 destination countries during 2024 was 71.2% which was 74.2% a year ago in 2023, that is, now Indian tourists are turning towards new international destinations, Indians are now seen in every continent.
  • Abu Dhabi of UAE, Hanoi of Vietnam, Bali of Indonesia have emerged as the most favorite destinations. Apart from the top-10 countries, about 51 lakh Indians went to new destinations, which include countries like New Zealand, Portugal, Poland and Uzbekistan.
  • The number of Indians going to Vietnam has increased by 67% within a year, while those going to Saudi Arabia have increased by 30% and those going to Thailand by 26%.

Thailand is the number 1 holiday destination

The biggest purpose of going abroad is to have a holiday. In the year 2024, 42.52% Indians went abroad for holidays. 15% of Indians traveled for business and professional reasons while the percentage of those traveling abroad for studies was only 2.45%. 92.9% of Indians who went to Thailand were holiday destinations and 91.6% of Indians who went to Vietnam were leisure destinations.
