The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) system is mounted slightly aft of the aircraft’s landing gear. Which generates electricity from air and provides it to the aircraft in emergency.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Sunday directed airline Air India to re-check the stowage (fitting and condition) of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) of all Boeing 787 aircraft in which the power conditioning module (PCM) has been recently replaced.
The DGCA directive comes in the wake of recent technical incidents involving two Boeing 787 aircraft of Air India and the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP)’s demand to ground all Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India.
DGCA has also sought a detailed report from American aircraft manufacturer Boeing on measures to prevent such incidents. Apart from this, it sought complete data of incidents of such uncommanded RAT deployment in Boeing 787 series aircraft across the world. Besides, information about service difficulty report seen after replacement of PCM module has also been demanded.
In fact, on October 4, the RAT had opened automatically just before the landing of Amritsar-Birmingham flight AI-117. After this, on October 9, flight AI-154 coming from Vienna to Delhi had to be diverted to Dubai due to autopilot system failure and technical glitches.
October 10: Pilot Association’s letter to DGCA
The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) had on October 10 demanded the DGCA to ground all Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India. For this, it was said that the electrical system of Boeing 787 aircraft should be tested. There was also a demand for a special audit of Air India.
FIP President Captain CS Randhawa told Civil Aviation that FIP represents 5 thousand pilots. This demand has been made after the incidents related to RAT and electrical systems of Boeing aircraft. Since the maintenance of the planes by new engineers, more defects are coming to light. Minimum Equipment List (MEL) release and checking for repetitive snags are essential.
October 9: AI 154 had to be diverted to Dubai
Air India flight AI154, going from Vienna, Austria to Delhi, was landed in Dubai due to a technical glitch. According to the airline, after checking the flight, clearance was given for take off again.
The flight departed from Dubai at 8.45 am. All passengers are safe. The autopilot, ILS, flight directors and flight control systems in the plane had failed.
4 October: AI 117’s ram air turbine deployed
Air India flight AI-117 (Boeing Dreamliner 787-8) going from Amritsar to Birmingham, England, made an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport on October 4. The flight took off from Amritsar at 12:52 pm and reached Birmingham about 10 hours 45 minutes later.
Before landing, the aircraft’s Ram Air Turbine (RAT) automatically activated, after which the pilot made a precautionary emergency landing. Air India said that all passengers and crew are completely safe. Read the full news…
FIP is demanding since Ahmedabad accident
