West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the incident of gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur. He said that girl students should not roam outside at night. One should be especially cautious in deserted areas.

He said – The entire responsibility of this incident lies with the college administration. Private colleges should take responsibility for the safety of girl students. Police have been instructed to take strictest action. No one will be spared, three people have been arrested.

Actually, BJP and other opposition parties are raising questions on Mamta government on Durgapur rape case. Odisha CM also demanded strict action from Bengal CM, after which Mamata Banerjee has given this statement.

Medical student was raped on Friday

A case of gang rape of a medical student came to light in Durgapur of Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. The incident happened on Friday. The victim had gone for dinner with a male friend. While returning, 3 people blocked his way. The student’s friend left her and ran away, after which the accused brutalized her.

Police said on Saturday that the victim is a resident of Jaleshwar in Odisha and is a second year student of a private medical college in Durgapur. This incident happened outside the medical college campus. The medical student is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) team is going to Durgapur on Sunday. BJP leader and Union Minister Sukant Majumdar said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made West Bengal a safe haven for rapists and criminals.

Bengal included in top-5 states in cases of crimes against women

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on September 30 made public the report of crimes committed in the country during 2023. According to this report, West Bengal is at fourth position among the top 5 states of the country in terms of crimes against women.

UP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan are at the forefront in crimes against women. At the same time, Madhya Pradesh is at number five, where women are the victims of most crimes.

NCRB said that in 2023, 4 lakh 48 thousand 211 cases related to crimes against women were registered, in which the highest cases were ‘cruelty by husband or relative’, ‘kidnapping’, ‘rape’ and ‘molestation’.
