There was chaos at Burdwan railway station while catching the train on Sunday evening. At least seven passengers were injured when a stampede broke out amid a huge crowd of passengers on the station stairs. All the injured have been immediately admitted to Burdwan Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, three trains were standing on platform numbers 4, 6 and 7 of Burdwan station at around the same time in the evening. In a hurry to catch the train, the passengers started descending the stairs rapidly.

Due to the stairs being narrow, the crowd suddenly increased and a scuffle started. During this time many passengers fell and a stampede broke out. The injured were sent to the hospital. Railway officials said that investigation into the accident has been started.

This accident has happened before

A few years ago, a major accident took place at the same Burdwan station due to the collapse of a water tank, in which many people died. After that incident, Railways had taken several steps regarding security arrangements.

However, passengers allege that except platform number 1, the escalators of all the platforms have been broken for a long time, due to which passengers still have to go up and down the stairs.

It is being told that today’s incident also happened on the stairs connecting platform numbers 4 and 5.

Railways said – vigilance will be increased

According to railway sources, after this accident the railway administration has started reviewing the security arrangements. Instructions have been given to further strengthen crowd management and rescue arrangements in case of emergency.
