Prime Minister Narendra Modi met CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday night. He congratulated him on being elected Vice President.
CP Radhakrishnan will be the 15th Vice President of the country. NDA candidate Radhakrishnan defeated India candidate Sudarshan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. This is the second lowest margin in the Vice Presidential elections in the last 23 years. In 2002, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat of NDA defeated Congress candidate Sushil Shinde by 149 votes.
CP Radhakrishnan is the third person to reach the post of Vice President from Tamil Nadu. India’s first Vice President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and Ramaswamy Venkataraman were also from Tamil Nadu.
In the polling held on Tuesday, 767 (98.2%) of MPs cast their votes. Radhakrishnan got 452 votes and Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes, while 15 votes were declared invalid. The victory required 377 votes.
The BJP claims that there have been 14 cross voting from the opposition parties and some opposition MPs deliberately cast their invalid votes. After voting, the opposition claimed to unite all all 315 of its MPs. However, this did not show this in the results.

Why did BJP bring Vice President’s face from South, 2 reasons …
- Assembly elections will be held in Tamil Nadu in 2026. This time the BJP will be eyeing increasing the vote share. In 2021, he won 4 seats by contesting 20 seats. The party’s vote share was only 2.6 percent.
- 140 seats in Kerala are to be held in 2026 assembly elections. There is no BJP member in the current assembly. The BJP did not win even a single seat in the 2021 elections. In this election, BJP will be expected to open an account.
Votes cast on the basis of ideology in Vice Presidential election
The Vice Presidential election was based on ideology this time. Usually, the identity of language or region also affects such elections, but this time it did not happen. The NDA candidate Radhakrishnan was not given a single vote by Tamil Nadu’s largest party DMK, while the opposition candidate Reddy Telugu -speaking did not vote by Andhra Pradesh’s TDP and YSRCP despite being Telugu speaking.
Both candidates got their own political blocks of NDA and India. There are elections in Tamil Nadu next year, but DMK gave a message by not voting for Radhakrishnan that whatever party is with NDA is not necessary with Tamils.
At the same time, a TDP leader said- Even after not having a whip, voting for NDA means that the leadership of the ruling and opposition party has a strong hold on the organization. Parties like BJD and BRS did not participate in this election, but their MPs were also tied to voting as per the party’s decision.

Reaction to Radhakrishnan’s victory …
- After defeat Sudarshan Reddy Said- Today, the MPs have given their verdict in the election for the post of Vice President of India. I politely accept this result with unwavering belief in democratic processes. Best wishes to the newly elected Vice President CP Radhakrishnan for the beginning of his term.
- Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Said- It was more than an election, it was a fight for ideology. We hope that the newly elected Vice Presidents will maintain the values of parliamentary traditions. Will ensure equal place and respect for the opposition, and will not come under pressure from the ruling party.
- PM Narendra Modi Said- Congratulations to Radhakrishnan ji on winning the Vice Presidential election of 2025. His life has always been devoted to social service and empowering the poor and the underprivileged. I am confident that they will be a better Vice President who will strengthen our constitutional values.
