After the death of his wife, Dasharatha Manjhi cut the mountain
Dasharatha Manjhi was born in 1934 in Gahlaur village in Gaya district. He belonged to a Mushar caste. He started working at a very young age.
In 1950, Dasharatha Manjhi married Bhagirathi Devi. There was a mountain between Gahlore and the nearby market Wazirganj, causing the people of the village to be cut from hospitals, markets, schools etc. To go to Wazirganj, one had to travel 55 kilometers.
One day in 1960, Dasaratha Manjhi’s wife Bhagirathi Devi crossed the mountain and went to bring food and water. While returning, she slipped to the mountain and was seriously injured. The hospital was far away. He died due to not reaching on time.
This incident shook Dasharatha Manjhi. He decided that they would cut the mountain and make way and reduce the distance to the market.

The film “Mountain Man” was made in 2015 on Dasharatha Manjhi.
Started cutting mountains alone from 1960 without any government help. After cutting the mountain continuously for 22 years, 110 meters long, 9.1 meter wide and 7.6 meters deep in 1982 was ready.
Due to this, the distance of Wazirganj and Ghalore reduced from 55 kilometers to only 15 kilometers. After this, Manjhi’s work gradually came into the limelight through media and social workers.
Government made state guest in 2006
In 2006, the Bihar government gave him the status of state guest. The then President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam also appreciated his contribution. Dasharatha Manjhi got cancer in the gallous duct. He died on 17 August 2007 in Delhi AIIMS. Bihar government performed his last rites with state honors.
In 2015, the film “Mountain Man” based on him was released, in which Nawazuddin Siddiqui played his role. Manjhi monument and road in Gahlore were named.
