Stice Arvind Kumar and Justice N.V. Anjaria’s bench heard the case.
The Supreme Court on Friday acquitted a woman (mother -in -law), who was sentenced to dowry harassment. The court said that the news of the daughter -in -law being persecuted for dowry spreads faster than the wind. A bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria said,

The neighbor witness had made it clear that the woman never demanded dowry from the daughter -in -law and her family members. Despite this, the lower courts ignored his testimony.
The case is of Uttarakhand. Here in 2001, a woman committed suicide shortly after marriage. Her father had lodged a complaint that the daughter was pregnant and in her in -laws her in -laws she was tortured for dowry. It was alleged that the mother -in -law used to taunt. However, the husband was not present in the city at that time.
After investigation, the trial court sentenced the mother to three years, convicting the father’s allegations. While the father -in -law and the brother -in -law were acquitted. Later, the High Court also retained the same decision.

No concrete evidence in case
The Supreme Court said that any demand for dowry comes under the purview of Section 498-A (cruelty), but there is no concrete evidence in this case. Therefore, the decision of the High Court in the case is canceled and the mother -in -law was acquitted.
