For the first time in the country, the number of teachers in an academic session has reached more than 1 crore. However, there are 1,04,125 schools across the country which have only one teacher. At the same time, there is not a single enrollment in 7993 schools, that is, no one studies there. However, both these figures have decreased compared to the previous session.
This figure has been revealed in the report of the academic session 2024-25 of the Unified District Information System for Education (Uudis). Udice is the data base of the Union Ministry of Education, which aims to collect information related to education from all schools.
Number of female teachers increased rapidly
The latest report states that the total teachers in the 2023-24 season were 98.83 lakhs, which has now increased to 1,01,22,420. Of these, 51% (51.47 lakh) teachers are in government schools. The number of female teachers has also increased rapidly in a decade.
In 2014-15, the male teacher was 45.46 lakhs and the female was 40.16 lakhs, which has increased to 2024-25 to 46.41 lakh and 54.81 lakh respectively. The number of female teachers in the last decade is about 8% of their recruitments. Since 2014, 61% of 51.36 lakh recruitments have been of women teachers.
People-Teacher Ratio: Now a teacher on 21 students, earlier at 31
- At the middle level, 10 years ago, a teacher had 26 students, who have come down to 17. At the secondary level it has come down from 31 to 21. That is, dialogue between students and teachers is getting better. The less the students with teachers, they will be able to give them more time.
- The dropout rate has decreased. It was 10.9% in 2023-24 on secondary, which is 8.2% left in 2024-25. At the middle level, it has come down to 3.5% compared to 5.2% and the primary to 3.7% to 2.3%.
- The retention rate on primary has now increased from 85.4 % to 92.4 % in 2023-24. It has increased from 78% to 82.8% on the middle, then it has increased from 45.6% to 47.2% on secondary. The nomination rate at the secondary level has increased to 68.5%.

- The highest primary schools are (80%) in Bengal and the lowest in Chandigarh (3%). Chandigarh has 1222 students per school. It is 59 in Ladakh.
- At the higher secondary level, a teacher in schools in Jharkhand has to teach an average of 47. This figure in Sikkim is only 7 on average.
- Bihar Upper Primary (69%), Secondary (51%) and Higher Secondary (38%) are at the bottom of all levels in gross enrollment ratio (GER). This ratio suggests how many children of his qualified age at some level are studying in school.
- Chandigarh has the highest ratio where GER of upper primary is 120%, 110% of middle and 107% of higher secondary.
