Scientist Sandeep Sharma of Meteorological Center, Shimla said – Earlier on October 11, 2018, early snowfall of 6 cm was recorded in Keylong. But this time on October 6 itself there has been snowfall of about one foot. This is the earliest snowfall till date.

During the last three days in the state, there has been snowfall in the higher areas of Kullu, Lahaul Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Mandi, Kangra and Shimla districts. But in many places the snow will melt in a day or two. Now we will talk about those 10 tourist places where tourists will be able to see snow in the next 4-5 days or the entire winter season.

  • Atal Tunnel Rohtang: There has been 4 to 5 cm fresh snowfall at the North Portal of Atal Tunnel. Tourists will be able to see snow here for the next three to four days. To reach Atal Tunnel, it is necessary to reach Manali first. Tourists can reach Manali from Kiratpur-Manali four lane. The distance of Atal Tunnel from Manali is about 25 kilometers. It takes about one and a quarter hour to reach Atal Tunnel from Manali.

  • Rohtang Pass: Rohtang Pass has received more than 2 feet of snowfall. Now snow will be seen here till May-June next year. Thousands of tourists come here every year to see snow. Rohtang Pass is about 62 kilometers from Manali. It takes three to three and a half hours to reach here from Manali.
  • Sissu: About 6 to 7 cm of snow has fallen in Sisu of Lahaul Spiti. Tourists will be able to see snow in Sissu for the next 4 to 5 days. The distance from Manali to Sissu is about 40 kilometers. It will take one and a quarter hour to cover this distance.

  • Koksar: About 6 cm of snow has fallen in Koksar also. Here too the snow will melt after three-four days. After this the tourists will have to go to the higher areas of Lahaul Spiti to see snow. Koksar is also about 41 kilometers away from Manali.
  • Shinkula Pass: Shinkula Pass has received more than three feet of snowfall. Tourists here too will now be able to see snow throughout the winter season. It is about 140 kilometers from Manali. After crossing Atal Tunnel, one can reach here by Darcha road. The trip to Shinkula should be done keeping in mind the weather conditions, as snowfall starts here at any time. In such a situation, there is a fear of getting stuck in snow if you go here in bad weather.

  • Baralacha: Three feet of snow has fallen in Baralacha. Here too snow will be seen till May-June next year. The distance from Manali to Baralacha is about 144 kilometers and it takes four hours to reach here.
  • Sachpass: More than two feet snowfall has been recorded in Sachpass of Chamba. Here too snow will be seen till May-June next year. Tourists mostly come here from Punjab. It is about 130 kilometers away from Chamba district headquarters. Tourists coming from outside the state can reach here via Pathankot-Chamba National Highway.
  • Manimahesh: Religious tourist destination Manimahesh has also received snowfall of up to two feet. But reaching here has become challenging, because the roads to Manimahesh have been badly damaged this monsoon season. Here too snowfall will be seen till May-June. Manimahesh can also be reached from Pathankot-Chamba NH. The distance from Chamba to Bharmour is approximately 60 kilometers.
  • Pastoral holding: Padri Jot is a beautiful tourist destination of Chamba. This is the area bordering Jammu and Kashmir. Up to one foot of snow has fallen here. Tourists will be able to see snow in Padri Jot for the next 15 to 20 days. It is 96 kilometers away from Chamba.
  • Chitkul: In Kinnaur district, up to one foot of snow has fallen in Chitkul, the border area with China. Tourists will be able to see snow here for 8 to 10 days. To reach Chitkul, tourists first have to reach Karchham from Chandigarh-Shimla-Kinnaur NH. Chitkul can be reached from Karcham by covering a distance of about 75 kilometers.
