The protesters set the CRPF car on fire and burnt the BJP office in Leh.
On the Leh violence, the Home Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday night, “Sonam Wangchuk instigated the crowd with his inflammatory statements, broke his fast amid violence, but went to his village from ambulance instead of trying to control the situation.”
The ministry said that the highlight committee discussion is going on on the demands on which Wangchuk was on hunger strike. Many leaders had asked Wangchuk to end the strike, but they continued the strike.
In fact, students and local people protested in support of social activist Sonam Wangchuk on hunger strike for 15 days for the demand for full state status to Union Territory Ladakh.
The protesters had called a bandh on Wednesday to protest against not fulfilling their previous demands. During this time violence took place. The students had stoned the police. The BJP office and CRPF car set fire.
This was followed by a clash with the security forces of the protesters. 4 people died in this, more than 70 people were injured. Around 30 security personnel are also injured. The administration banned the rally-demonstration without permission in Leh. Which is still applicable today.

- On 10 September 2025, Sonam Wangchuk started a fast. His demand was that Ladakh should get state status and be included in the 6th Schedule. The government is already in talks with Apex Body Leh and Kargil Democratic Alliance.
- Large decisions were taken from this conversation- 1. Reservation of Scheduled Tribes was increased from 45% to 84%. 2. 33% reservation was given to women in councils. 3. Bhoti and Pargi languages were made the official language. The recruitment process of 4.1800 jobs started. But some people were not happy with this progress and started trying to spoil the conversation.
- The next meeting of HPC will be held on 6 October. Apart from this, there will be meetings with leaders on 25 and 26 September. The issues on which Wangchuk were fasting on are already part of the discussion in HPC. Many leaders asked him to end his fast, but he continued to provoke people by giving examples like Arab Spring and Nepal Gen Z movement.
- On September 24, at 11 am, the crowd broke out of the hunger strike and broke at the office of a political party and the government CEC office in Leh. They set fire to offices and vehicles, attacked the police and more than 30 police/CRPF personnel were injured. When the situation deteriorated, the police had to shoot, in which some people died.
- The situation came under control till 4 pm on 24 September. The government says that the violence took place by Sonam Wangchuk’s inflammatory speeches. Amidst the violence, he broke the fast and returned to the village without trying to handle the situation.
- The government is fully committed to providing constitutional security to the people of Ladakh. Also, there is an appeal to people not to spread old or inflammatory video on media or social media.

A meeting with the government will be held in Delhi on 6 October. In the year 2019, two union territories were created while removing Article 370 and 35A. At that time, the government assured to restore the status of full state when the state’s situation was normal.
Protests begin in Ladakh after Article 370 removed
On 5 August 2019, the Central Government removed Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and abolished the status of full state. After this, Jammu and Kashmir became a separate union territory. Ladakh became a separate union territory by combining Leh and Kargil.
After this, the people of Leh and Kargil started feeling politically evicted. He raised his voice against the Center. In the last two years, people have been protesting several times and have been demanding full state status and constitutional security, which led to their land, jobs and separate identity, which they got under Article 370.
In August 2024, the Home Minister announced to create 5 new districts in Ladakh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced to create 5 new districts on 26 August 2024 in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The new districts will be named Janskar, Dras, Sham, Nubra and Changthang. Before the announcement of new districts, Ladakh had only two districts, Leh and Kargil. Now their number will increase to 7.
