The doctors described the situation as ‘Marmeda Syndrome’ or ‘Sirenomellia’. In such children, the gender is not detected after birth. According to doctors, the lifespan of such children is usually very short. It is being described as the first case of Chhattisgarh and the second such case of India. At the same time, 300 cases have been revealed in the world.

The delivery doctor Ragini Singh Thakur said that both the legs of the child were connected like a mermaid. The upper part of the baby such as the eye, nose and heart developed, but the lower part of the spinal cord was connected. The weight of the child was only 800 grams.

Usually, such an abnormalities are detected in sonography, but in this case the information came out after direct delivery. He said that this condition may arise due to lack of proper nutrition, improper blood circulation from mother to child or contact with the fetus environmental teratogen (some medicines).

According to experts, ‘Marmeda syndrome’ boys are seen almost three times more than girls. This condition is so serious that most of the infants are born dead, and even if they are alive, they are able to live a few hours or a few days despite treatment.

In this congenital pathology, the development of the lower body is extremely underdeveloped, due to which life-sax organs such as kidneys, urethra and genitalia are not fully developed. This is the reason that the death rate of the infant is considered to be almost 100 percent in this condition.

According to a report published in the ‘International Journal of Reproduction, Contrastation, Obstetrics and Gynecology’, only about 300 cases of ‘Marmed Syndrome’ have been documented in the world from 1542 till date from 1542 till date.

This makes it one of the world’s rarest congenital malformations. Earlier in India, the first such case was reported in Uttar Pradesh in 2016, where a woman gave birth to ‘Marmede Baby’. The baby survived only for 10 minutes.
