On Thursday, the Karnataka government has approved the Period Leave Policy 2025. With this, women working in government offices, private companies and industrial sectors will get 1 paid menstrual leave every month i.e. 12 holidays in a year.

This policy was discussed in the cabinet meeting of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

work was going on for a year

Karnataka Labor Minister Santosh Lad said, ‘The department was working on this for the last one year. Many people also registered their objections regarding this. We also talked to different departments.

Women are under a lot of stress, especially those who work for 10 to 12 hours a day. So we wanted to be a little progressive and give them a day off. Now they will have the freedom to take one day leave in a month. We hope that this will not be misused. If there is any need, we will add more rules in the coming time.

60 lakh women will benefit

According to the Labor Department, there are about 60 lakh working women in the state. Of these, 25 to 30 lakh women work in the corporate sector. The department will hold a meeting with all the employers once and make them aware of this new rule.

Before the policy was approved, a committee of 18 members had given some suggestions. In this, the changes occurring in the body of women during periods, their difficulties and the need of rest for their body at such times were mentioned.

Sapna S, head of the law department of Christ University, was leading this committee. After this the government learned its advantages and disadvantages. Suggestions were taken on this from different departments and organizations. Also understood the impact on women dominated industries like textile industry.

Already implemented in Bihar, Odisha

With this, Karnataka has become a part of those few states in the country where women are given period leave. In Bihar, women get two period leaves every month. Recently, it was announced to give 1 period leave for women working in government departments in Odisha.
