PM Narendra Modi will be visiting Manipur on Saturday. He will address two different rallies in Imphal and Churachandpur. The PM will inaugurate the Bairabi-Garg railway line project here and lay the foundation of several projects.
This will be Modi’s first visit to the violence between Maetai and Cookie communities in Manipur since May 2023. At the same time, this is his 8th visit to the state after becoming PM. Prior to this, he has visited Manipur 7 times between 2014 and 2022.
After the violence started, the opposition has been continuously demanding PM Modi to go to Manipur. Now this tour of PM has been welcomed by the opposition. Rahul Gandhi said, “The problem of Manipur has been going on for a long time, it is good that they are going there now.”
PM Modi will lay the foundation of 8500 crore projects The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on Friday that PM will go to Churachandpur at around 12:30 pm on Saturday afternoon. There, he will lay the foundation stone of several development projects costing more than Rs 7,300 crore from the main ground in Churadanpur Town and will address the public meeting.
Subsequently, he will inaugurate development projects costing more than Rs 1,200 crore from the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal at around 2:30 pm and addressed the public meeting.
The opposition had been demanding from PM Modi to Manipur for two years
After the violence started in Manipur, opposition parties constantly demanded PM Modi to go to Manipur. The Congress accused the Prime Minister of ignoring the problem of Manipur and not paying attention despite having BJP rule.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded accountability from the Prime Minister on the position of Manipur in Rajya Sabha on 4 April 2025. He said- The Prime Minister should go to Manipur and fix the law and order there.
Expert told the meaning of PM Modi’s visit to Manipur Senior Journalist Sangeeta Barua Pisaroti, who has been covered for a long time on the Manipur violence, said that PM Modi has faced strong criticism from the opposition due to not going to Manipur. Right now they are also targeted by the opposition on the issue of vote theft.

Rahul Gandhi went to Manipur 3 times during violence
- 29-30 June 2023: Police stopped Rahul’s convoy, left tear gas Rahul was going to Churachandpur to meet the violence victims by road. In Bishnupur, about 20km from Imphal, the police stopped their convoy citing security. Tear gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd. Rahul returned to Imphal and went to Churachandpur by helicopter.

Modi spoke 3 times on Manipur in 2 years
1. 20 July 2023: First day of monsoon session of Parliament PM Modi had said on the incident of rolling two tribal women in Manipur- We should be ashamed of this incident that insults the country. 2. August 10, 2023: On the motion of no confidence in Lok Sabha The opposition brought a no -confidence motion demanding to speak on the Manipur violence. The PM replied to this- I want to assure all the countrymen that the efforts that are going on, the sun of peace will definitely rise in the near future. Manipur will then move forward with new confidence.
3. 15 August 2023 – From Red Fort on Independence Day Prime Minister Modi in his address mentioned Manipur twice. He said- In Manipur, there was a mess with the honor of mother and daughters. People lost their lives. There have been reports of peace continuously for a few days. Efforts are being made for peace. The path of solution will come out with peace.
Government-cookie organizations reached an agreement before PM’s visit The new Suspension of Operations (SOO) agreement was signed between the Central Government, Manipur Government, Cookie Organization (KZC) and the United People’s Front on 4 September, 10 days before the Prime Minister’s visit to Manipur. After this, the National Highway NH-2 connecting Cookie-which was connected to Nagaland-Nagaland-Nagaland-NH-2 was opened.
It was closed since the violence of Metai and Cookie communities erupted in May 2023. This path connects the Kuki area to the Maetai area. Now this route will allow the movement of people and essential items without interruption. The KZC has assured that it will cooperate with the security forces deployed by the Government of India, so that peace can be maintained on NH-02.
3 big reasons for violence between Cookie-Metai
1. ST (Scheduled Tribes) Demand: On 14 April 2023, the Manipur High Court directed the state government to send a recommendation for the status of ST for the Maetai community. After this order, outrage spread in the cookie community and violence erupted.
Cookie is already in the ST category. They are afraid that if Maetai also gets the status of ST, they will be able to buy land in the hilly areas and this will endanger their cultural, social and geographical existence.
About 10% of the land area in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, where Maetai lives the majority. The remaining 90% of the hilly area is of cookie and Naga communities. This area comes under tribal lands and Maetai cannot buy land here.
2. Demand for separate cookie administration: Cookie community is demanding separate administrative autonomy as ‘Kukiland’ or ‘Zoomland’. The Maetai community and the state government considers this demand a threat to the integrity of the state.
3. Cookie accused of smuggling drugs: The Cookie community has been accused of smuggling drugs from Myanmar. The government also accused cookie of involvement in smuggling illegal opium cultivation, which further increased his mistrust towards the government.
Cookie believes that such allegations are made to discredit her community. The Cookie community alleges that the Manipur government (former BJP government) takes the side of Maetai. They also accuse security forces and police of unilateral action.
President’s rule in Manipur for last 7 months
The then Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh resigned on 9 February 2025. He was constantly undergoing political pressure due to not being able to stop the violence that has been going on for more than two years. After Biren Singh’s resignation, President’s rule came into force in Manipur on 13 February, which continues till now.
In 2017, BJP removed the Congress for 15 years in power In Manipur, the Congress was in power for 15 years after winning the assembly elections three times in a row before 2017. In the 2012 elections, the Congress won 42 out of a total of 60 seats. In 2017, the Congress became the largest party by winning 28 seats, but remained 3 seats away from the majority.
The BJP won 21 seats and the government won a majority with parties like NPP, NPF and LJP. Chief Minister N. The BJP government was formed under the leadership of Biren Singh. For the first time in the history of Manipur, the BJP government was formed in the state.
In 2022, BJP won 32 seats and touched the majority figure alone. Later, NPP, JDU and other small parties also got support. Biren Singh became the Chief Minister for the second consecutive time. At the same time, the Congress was reduced to only 5 seats in the Manipur Assembly.
3 most popular cases of Manipur violence
1. Two tribal women rolled naked on the road (4 May 2023) In Manipur, a crowd of hundreds rolled two cookie tribal women on the road. Both were gangraped. People also made a video of the incident, which became quite viral on social media. The incident caused resentment across the country. The CBI had told in its charge sheet that the women had sought help from the policemen present on the spot, but they pushed the women to the crowd.
Both women were from the same family, one of which was 40 and the other was 20 years old.
2. Militants who came in khaki uniform attacked CRPF camp (November 11, 2024) Hi -Tech armed uniformed cookie militants fired indiscriminately at the Borobekra Police Station and the CRPF camp adjacent to it in Jiribam. 10 militants were killed in retaliation by security forces. There was a minor among them. Most militants were in uniform and khaki dress.
A video of the bodies of militants killed in the encounter was revealed, in which all the khaki appeared in uniforms.
3. murder of six women and children in Ziribam (November, 2024) Three women and three children from a family of Maetai community were abducted from Jiribam district of Manipur. A few days later his bodies were found floating in the river in pieces. The dead had a 60 -year -old woman, 31 and 25 years old, and her children. The children were 8 years, 2.5 years old and 10 months old. It was claimed that 10 militants were killed to avenge the murder.
The bodies of people missing for about a week were found in Jiribam’s Jiri River and Barak River in Assam.
