The education department of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of Punjab has deducted the mobile allowance of 1.21 lakh teachers in lieu of closing schools due to floods. The department argued that the Finance Department has directed that if schools remain closed for 10 consecutive days then teachers should not be given mobile allowance.

Schools remained closed for 11 consecutive days in the months of August-September. In such a situation this allowance was deducted. On this, Manoj Kumar of Hindi Teachers Association said that the Punjab government gives mobile allowance of Rs 500 and Rs 600 every month to the teachers according to the grade pay. This month, the Education Department has saved Rs 6 crore by cutting the mobile allowance of teachers.
State President of Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) Vikram Dev Singh said that on one hand the government is cutting the allowance and on the other hand it is asking for funds in the name of flood relief.
Why mobile allowance to teachers? Ever since the Education Department started taking online work from teachers, they are given an allowance of Rs 500 to 600 every month. Earlier, teachers were asked to feed subject white marking data. Then after the Corona period, apart from studies, many other works were started online. After this, allowance was given for using the internet.
What is the 10 day order of Finance Department? On August 16, 2013, the Finance Department had issued a letter regarding mobile allowance. In which it was said that if there are more than 10 consecutive days of holidays in the Court, Education Department or other departments, then mobile allowance cannot be given to their employees. There are no 10 holidays in a month Regarding this, Democratic Teachers Front Punjab President Vikram Dev Singh says that even if the Education Department is talking about the orders of the Finance Department, the teachers’ mobile allowance is not deducted.
