Classical singer and Padmavibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra died at 4.15 am on Thursday. Daughter Namrata Mishra told that Dad was at my own house in Mirzapur. He will be cremated in Kashi.

Born in Azamgarh

Born in Hariharpur, Azamgarh, Chhannulal Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was born on 3 August 1936 in Hariharpur in Azamgarh, UP. His grandfather Gudai Maharaj Shanta Prasad was a famous tabla player. Chhannulal learned the nuances of music from his father Badri Prasad Mishra at the age of six. At the age of 9, Chhannulal was taught by his first guru Ustad Gani Ali Sahab.

He first learned music with his father Badri Prasad Mishra and then educated him by ‘Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan’ of Grocery Gharana. After this, Thakur Jaydev Singh trained him.

Music studies in Bihar, Pandit Chhannulal, who came to Varanasi 4 decades ago, is known for Khayal, Thumri, Bhajan, Dadra, Kajri and Chaiti. His musical education was received in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Around 4 decades ago Pandit Chhannulal moved to Varanasi. Here he intensified the edge of his music practice. Classical-Loks like Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Chaiti are famous in the country and abroad for the unique confluence of genres.
