There is a lime shallow rock chain between Rameswaram in India and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. It is known as Ram Sethu in India and Adams Bridge (Adam’s bridge) worldwide.

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a reply from the central government on a petition related to the demand for declaration of Ram Sethu as a national monument. The apex court has issued a notice on the petition of former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy. The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, while consenting to the Swami’s petition, has asked the Center to reply in four weeks. Swami in his petition cited an order given by the Supreme Court on 19 January 2023.

According to the petition, at that time the Center had told the court that the issue of declaring Ram Sethu as a national heritage is being considered. The court had asked the Center to take a decision on this and gave Swami the freedom that if he is not satisfied, he could come back to court. Swami’s new petition stated,

Following the order of 19 January 2023, he handed over a representation to the Center on 27 January 2023 with all the documents. After this, on 13 May 2025, he sent another new representation, but so far neither he nor the Supreme Court has received any reply.

The petition demanded that the Ministry of Culture be directed to take a decision on the representation of Swami as soon as possible as per the Supreme Court’s order of 19 January 2023.

Swami said- Ram Sethu is a symbol of faith Swami’s petition states that Ram Sethu is an archaeological site as well as the center of faith and reverence of crores of people. The petition stated that scientific and archaeological studies are evidence that it is a man -made structure, which devotees consider to be a pilgrimage site.

  • The length of this bridge is about 30 miles (48 km). This bridge separates the Gulf of Mannar and the Pak Strait Central from each other. The sea is very shallow in this area. Due to which there is a lot of difficulty in running large boats and ships here.
  • It is said that by 15 centuries, this structure could be moved from Rameswaram to Mannar Island, but the storms deepened the sea here after which the bridge drowned in the sea.
  • In 1993, NASA released satellite photos of this Ram Sethu in which it was described as a man -made bridge.
