On the investigation of 2023 Akola riots in Maharashtra on Thursday, the Supreme Court said that after wearing police uniforms, officers should rise above caste and religion and work only according to the law.
The court ordered the state government to form a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the riots, which includes senior officers of the Hindu and Muslim community.
The bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Alok Aradhe was hearing the petition of 17 -year -old Mohammad Sharif. Sharif said in the petition,
I was attacked during the riots, but the Maharashtra Police did not register an FIR nor investigated.
In fact, 1 person was killed and eight people, including two policemen, were injured in the riots in Akola, Maharashtra.

On 13 May 2023, there was violent between two communities over a social media post in Akola, Maharashtra. Akola SP Sandeep Ghughe had told- There was a stone pelting between two communities on a minor matter in the Old City area.
The miscreants burnt several vehicles. Some people also tried to surround the police station. During this time a person named Vilas Mahadevare Gaikwad was killed and eight people, including two policemen, were injured.
On 13 May 2023 in Akola, the mob also tried to surround the police station.
Bombay High Court dismissed petition in July 2024
Mohammad Sharif had earlier filed a petition in the Bombay High Court (Nagpur bench) in July 2024 but, it was rejected by the High Court. The petitioner then moved to the Supreme Court.
