The Uttarakhand High Court has currently stayed the punishment and fault of vaccine scientist Dr. Akash Yadav in the case of provoking his wife to suicide. The court said on Monday that Dr. Yadav’s work is related to vaccine development, which is very important for public health and national interest.

Dr. Yadav’s wife committed suicide in 2015 and blamed the husband in a suicide note. The marriage was only 7 months at that time. Dr. Yadav was earlier accused in the case of dowry harassment and wife’s suicide.

Dr. Yadav was acquitted of dowry allegations by the trial court in January, but sentenced to 5 years and 20 thousand rupees for abetment to suicide.

Role and petition of scientist

Dr. Yadav is a senior scientist in the Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) and is doing research on the vaccine. He was dropped from the institute after the sentence, which affected his research work. On this, he appealed in the court and demanded a stay on punishment and guilt.

Court respects – this damage to country interest

A bench of Justice Ravindra Maithani said that if the sentence is not stopped, it would not only be the professional loss of the petitioner, but will also be damaged by public health and country interest.

HC cited Supreme Court decisions

The court cited the old decisions of the Supreme Court (Ram Narang vs Ramesh Narang 1995 and Navjot Singh Sidhu vs Punjab Government 2007) in this case. The court said that defects can also be stopped in exception cases, if it is harming a person’s career and public interest.
