Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed deep concern over recent incidents in the judiciary on Monday. Referring to the incident of getting a huge amount of cash at a High Court judge’s residence, he said that it is not only worrisome, but it is going to shake the foundation of our judiciary.
The Vice President emphasized the need to immediately register FIR-in this case and go to its root. Dhankhar said these things while addressing students and teachers at the National Advanced Legal Studies University.
In fact, Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Verma’s house in Lutyens Delhi was on fire on the night of 14 March. The store room of his house was found sacks filled with bundles of 500-500 rupees burn notes. After which the question arose as to where so much cash came from.

- Expressed concern over corruption in the judiciary: Vice President Dhankar said, “I support the freedom of the judiciary. It is necessary to provide security to the judges as they work in complex circumstances. But when such incidents come to the fore, we have to face the truth.” He cited the cash found at the house of Justice Yashwant Verma.

- Demanded an inquiry: He said, “Where did this cash come from? Is this black money? Who is its owner? It should be investigated. It is a criminal act, and an FIR should be registered immediately for this.
- Questions on appointments after retirement of judges: The Vice President raised serious questions on the appointments given to the judges after retirement. He said that the Public Service Commission, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), do not get government posts after retirement. But there is no such rule for the judges.
- Expressed concern over the change in the Constitution: The Vice President questioned the changes made during the Emergency in the Preamble of the Constitution. He said, “Understand the preamble as a parent, which cannot be changed. No country in the world changed the preface of its constitution.
- Emphasized the separation of powers: Emphasizing the separation of the powers, the Vice President said, “The judiciary, executive, and the legislature should not interfere in each other’s field. If an institution interferes in the area of another, it can be dangerous for democracy.”

March 14: Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised the matter in the Rajya Sabha. He had raised the issue of judicial accountability and mentioned the pending notice to the Chairman regarding impeachment against a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
March 22: CJI Sanjeev Khanna formed a three -member committee to investigate the allegations against Justice Verma. He had asked the Delhi High Court Chief Justice not to hand over any work to Justice Verma.
March 22: Late in the night, the Supreme Court released a video of 15 crore cash from Justice’s house. In the 65 second video, burnt sacks filled with notes are visible. Justice Verma himself has been on leave since the revelations of the case.
March 21: A proposal was made to transfer the Allahabad High Court of Justice Verma.
Justice Yashwant Verma was appointed as a judge in the Allahabad High Court itself. After this, his Delhi High Court was transferred in October 2021. Before becoming a judge, he has also been the Chief Standing Council of the State Government in the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Verma also side in Supreme Court report
The report also has Justice Verma’s side, in which he has said that he or his family never kept any money in the store room where notes are being found. It is an open place where everyone has to come and go. They are being implicated in this case.
Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay submitted a report to the Supreme Court on 21 March after the internal inquiry. The Supreme Court has refused to give judicial work to Justice Verma. Now 6 months’ call details of Justice Verma will be examined.
